Es gibt Bücher über Autos, die informieren wollen, und es gibt Bücher, bei denen man schon beim ersten Durchblättern merkt, dass es um etwas anderes geht. *Vintage Cars* von Ken Gross gehört eindeutig zur zweiten Kategorie. Der großformatige Band aus dem Hause Assouline ist eine Hommage an die Ära, in der Automobile noch unverwechselbare Formen hatten und jedes Detail eine eigene Geschichte zu erzählen schien.

Schon das Cover mit dem Maserati Tipo 61 macht neugierig. Im Inneren setzt sich dieser Eindruck fort. Die Fotografien von Laziz Hamani zeigen die Fahrzeuge nicht einfach nur als historische Objekte, sondern setzen ihre Linien, Lackierungen, Innenräume und zahlreichen Details eindrucksvoll in Szene. Gerade bei den Aufnahmen der Karosserien wird deutlich, wie nah sich Automobilbau und Kunst manchmal kommen können.

Ken Gross führt kenntnisreich durch die Welt der klassischen Automobile. Dabei geht es nicht allein um technische Daten oder historische Fakten. Vielmehr vermittelt das Buch ein Gefühl für die Zeit, in der diese Fahrzeuge entstanden sind, und für die Menschen, die sie heute sammeln, pflegen und bewahren. Dadurch bekommt der Band eine persönliche und beinahe emotionale Seite.

Besonders gefällt mir, dass *Vintage Cars* nicht wie ein klassisches Nachschlagewerk aufgebaut ist. Man kann sich einfach treiben lassen, bei einzelnen Fahrzeugen verweilen und immer wieder neue Details entdecken. Die hochwertige Gestaltung und die großartigen Fotografien machen das Buch zu einem echten Erlebnis.
