Nach Platon war Atlantis eine Seemacht, die große Teile Europas und Afrikas unterworfen hat. Und soll schließlich um 9600 v. Chr. infolge einer Naturkatastrophe innerhalb eines einzigen Tages und einer unglückseligen Nacht untergegangen sein.

Platon war ein griechischer Philosoph und einer der einflussreichsten Denker der abendländischen Philosophie. Und auch Schüler von Sokrates, er bekannte sich zu der von Sokrates gelehrten erkenntnistheoretischen Philosphie, insbesondere den ethischen Ansätzen, und zu den speziellen Lehrmethoden. Bekannt ist er durch die von ihm entwickelte Ideenlehre und für seine Visionen vom idealen Staat. 

Platons Lehren entfalteten ihre Wirkung über Jahrhunderte hinweg, von der antiken Philosophie über das Christentum und die islamische Gedankenwelt des Mittelalters sowie die Renaissance bis hin in das 20. Jahrhundert. Im Zentrum von PLATONs Philosophie steht seine Ideen- bzw. Formenlehre. Auch seine erkenntnistheoretischen Schriften, d.h. die Schriften zur Ethik, Psychologie, Staatslehre und Kunst können nur vor dem Hintergrund dieser Ideenlehre verstanden werden.

Bei Atlantis handelt es sich um eine in Platons Werk erfundene Geschichte, die eine zuvor aufgestellte Theorie anschaulich darstellen soll. Der Hintergrund dieser Geschichte ist umstritten. Während Althistoriker und Philologen fast ausnahmslos eine Erfindung Platons annehmen, die durch zeitgenössische Vorbilder inspiriert wurde, vermuten manche Autoren einen realen Hintergrund der Geschichte und unternahmen unzählige Versuche, Atlantis zu finden.

Doch diese autoritäre Staatsutopie war nur ironisch gemeint, und zu einer Ironie gehört nun einmal ein Gegenteil, auf das sie sich bezieht. Das ist hier eine gute, weise und gerechte Demokratie, das politische Credo Platons. Und das wurde über 2350 Jahre lang nicht erkannt. Warum verbarg Platon seine wahre politische Meinung? Platon codierte seine wahre politische Überzeugung als Demokrat, denn er war in Sorge, zu enden wie Sokrates, der sterben musste, weil er Athener Spießbürger intellektuell wie moralisch bloßstellte. Peinlich dabei ist, dass vor allem deutsche Platon-Wissenschaftler wie Kulturträger auf Platons „Fake-News“ hereinfielen.
